Best Costumed Mascots in the South

3.24.09

Last season we ranked the top live mascots in the South and Georgia's UGA came in at #1.  This year we rank the best costumed mascots.  View that here   http://www.dixiefriedsports.com/The_Best_Live_Mascots.html

1. Sebastian the Ibis(Miami)- No other mascot in college athletics has brought as much fun to the game as Sebastian. As we all know its pregame traditon for FSU's Seminole to carry a flaming spear into the stadium, well Sebastian felt as if this was a fire hazard and wanted to extinguish the flame. Prior to a 1989 game with the Seminoles, Sebastian brought a fire extinguisher onto the field to put out the flaming spear.  Unfortunately Sebastian was tackled by 5 police offers and his plan was ruined.

In another rivalry game Sebastian picks up a 15 yard penalty against Florida in the Sugar Bowl.  Following a Miami touchdown, Sebastian ran onto the field and taunted the Florida Gators.

Why an Ibis?  Well, the Ibis is the last bird to leave prior to a hurricane and the first to come back after the hurricane is over.

2.  Big Red(Western Kentucky)- This big red blob has now been WKU's official mascot since 1979.  While known mostly for his appearances for WKU's tradition rich basketball program, Big Red has also appeared on SportsCenter, NBC's Deal or No Deal, Numerous Capital One commercials, and has won multiple awards for nation's best mascot.

3. Cocky(South Carolina)- This big feathered rooster has been on the South Carolina sidelines since the early 80s.  Cocky took over for the mascot Big Spur and since has been named national mascot of the year 3 times.   Cocky is a rooster, but somehow was able to lay eggs on a golf course during a Capital One commercial.

4. Cayenne(Louisiana Lafayette)- This Rajun Pepper is a new mascot, but a great one.  What better symbol to have as a mascot represent an area so rich in local culture.  While ULL has had several mascots in the past like Cajun Man and the Cajun Chicken, they certainly found the right guy for the job in Cayenne.

5. Chief Osceola(Florida State)- Portrayed by a FSU student in traditional Seminole attire that is made by women of the Seminole Tribe, this mascot has been with FSU since the Oklahoma State game in 1978.  Osceola is often credited to the best pregame tradition in college football as he rides his horse Renegade onto the field and throws a spear into the ground.

6. Buzz(Georgia Tech)- The winner of the NCA Mascot Competition in 2000 and 2001 is the Yellow Jacket from Georgia Tech.  Buzz has parachuted into GT's stadium and even rappelled down a 40 story building in Atlanta.  Buzz is also the conductor for Tech's band during the Budweiser song.

7. Yosef(Appalachian State)-  The name "Yosef" comes from mountain talk for "yourself".  The idea is that if you are a friend, alumnus, and have a heart of black and gold you are Yosef.  After each TD for Appalachian State Yosef will fire off his musket, lately he's been very busy with this job.

8.  Demon Deacon(Wake Forest)- The mascot first came about in the early 40s when a Wake Forest Student dressed in a top hat and tails rode the North Carolina Ram into the stadium as part of a prank.  Since then this Deacon has been in many pranks.  At a game in the 80s, the Deacon even sung the national anthem.

9.  HokieBird(Virginia Tech)- The current version of HokieBird first arrived in a white limo in a home opener against Clemson in 1987.  Hokiebird is known to crowd surf, do bench presses after each TD, and has even been featured on Animal Planet's "Turkey Secrets"

10. Big Al(Alabama)-  The large elephant first appeared on the sidelines during the 1979 Sugar Bowl.   That night the Alabama Crimson Tide won the national championship over Penn State 14-7.  Since that time Al has become the symbol of Bama athletics.

11.  Big Red(Arkansas)- Joined by 3 others(Sue E, Boss Hog, and Pork Chop), Big Red is the leader of the Razorbacks family of mascots.  Big Red is so tough that during a 1994 final 4 game vs Arizona, the Wildcats'mascot blew out his knee trying to tackle Big Red.

12.  Albert(Florida)-  Albert is joined by Alberta on the Gator's sidelines during games.  Albert was featured on a 2006 Sportscenter commercial where he and Steve Irwin met after Albert walked out of an elevator.

13.  Weezie(Arkansas-Monticello)- Maybe the best nickname in the South is the "Boll Weevils".  The insect that ate the cotton fields of the south many years ago is put on our list because it is truly one of the most creative nicknames in sports.

14.  Rocky(South Florida)-  Rocky has one of the toughest looks and toughest names among the mascot world.  Just like boxer in the Rocky, USF has overcome many obstacles to become one of the better football programs in the country.

15.  Colonel Reb(Ole Miss)- The Ole Miss mascot is last on our list only because he's no longer an official mascot of the school.  If he were, he'd likely be in the top 3.  In 03 the school's administration eliminated him from the sidelines, but he can still be seen in the Grove and other Ole Miss functions.  Colonel Reb also has a song named after him "Colonel Reb is Crying", a song made during Coach O's tenure in Oxford.  SaveOleMiss.com is a site dedicated to saving Colonel Reb.
