New NationalChamp System

The Nature Boy approves of my new system

A New Way to Decide the National Champion

Ever since Michigan State beat Wisconsin on a last second Hail Mary Pass and Texas Tech upset Oklahoma more people have jumped on the "Death to the BCS" badwagon. It seems like every "expert" has their own playoff system or some new way to crown a BCS Champ. I say forget everything you've heard before and go with my idea of crowning a champ.

The idea comes from pro wrestling. The idea is that the champ must defend their title each week and remains champ until they are beaten. In the words of Ric Flair "To be the Man, you must beat the Man".

Here is how the College Football World would look if this had been put in place in 1998 instead of the BCS. Since the coaches poll is part of the BCS and not the AP, I chose Nebraska as my first champ(they won the coaches poll in 1997, the year prior to the BCS). The date listed is the date the new champ beat the previous champ.

1/2/98 Nebraska
10/10/98 Texas A&M
11/27/98 Texas
8/28/99 NC State
9/18/99 Florida State
10/7/00 Miami
1/3/03 Ohio State
10/11/03 Wisconsin
10/18/03 Purdue
10/25/03 Michigan
1/1/04 Southern Cal
1/4/06 Texas
9/9/06 Ohio State
1/8/07 Florida
9/29/07 Auburn
10/20/07 LSU
11/23/07 Arkansas
1/1/08 Missouri
10/11/08 Oklahoma State
10/25/08 Texas
11/1/08 Texas Tech
11/22/08 Oklahoma
1/8/09 Florida
12/5/09 Alabama
10/9/10 South Carolina
10/16/10 Kentucky
10/23/10 Georgia
10/30/10 Florida
11/13/10 South Carolina
12/4/10 Auburn
9/17/11 Clemson

A few observations

- Under this system some of the same champs that the BCS crowned at the end of the year became champs in my system. 2010 Auburn, 2009 Alabama, 2008 Florida, 2006 Florida, 2005 Texas, 2004 Southern Cal, 2003 Southern Cal, 2002 Ohio State, 2001 Miami, and 99 Florida State all ended up being champs at the end of the season in my system

-The only team that won a National Championship in the BCS system, that didn't win in my system was Tennessee. Every other national champ at least had 1 national championship

- The longest reign in my system was Miami with a 2 year and nearly 3 month reign. Southern Cal also had a 2 year reign

- Several teams only held the National Championship for 1 week

- The 2010 season gave us the most champs with 7 different teams

- Clemson is your current champ. Good chance that if the Tigers are still champs when they play South Carolina in Columbia that this game would be played in a steel cage

- This is not a serious proposal and of course would never happen
