Looking back at Garcia's career at South Carolina
With Garcia being kicked off the South Carolina Football team yesterday, it's time to look back on the career of Stephen Garcia
December 2006- Garcia enrolls early at the University of South Carolina. Garcia, an elite 11 QB, graduated high school early so he could be on campus for spring practice
Feb 17, 2007- Garcia is arrested in Columbia's 5 Points Bar District. Garcia had been attending a private party at a 5 Points Bar when an officer approached him. Garcia ran into an alley away from the officer, but was caught and charged with underage drinking and failure to stop for a police officer. Garcia was 19 at the time of the incident
March 6, 2007- Garcia is suspended from Spring Practice after he keys a professor's car. Spurrier said he hoped Garcia would make "an all-out effort to get his personal life in line with our other Carolina football players and eventually reach his full potential as a student-athlete." Garcia still was expected to attend classes and study hall
2007 Football Season- Garcia is redshirted, but does impress coaches in practice
March 25, 2008- Garcia is ticketed and pays a fine of $257 for another once again underage drinking. Garcia was also charged with extinguishing a fire extinguisher. Garcia was suspended from all athletic activities until August 15.
September 13, 2008- Garcia makes debut for South Carolina against Georgia. He got very little playing time with 1 pass attempt and 2 running plays.
September 27, 2008- Garcia takes about half the snaps for the Gamecocks at QB in a 26-13 win over UAB
October 11, 2008- Garcia leads a comeback win for the Gamecocks in the 2nd half against Kentucky as USC wins 27-17.
October 18, 2008- Garcia makes first career start against the defending National Champions LSU. While Garcia wasn't percect the Gamecocks made a good showing, but fell short late 24-17.
November 8, 2008- Garcia and Chris Smelley are rotated in and out on every play of South Carolina's 34-21 win
over Arkansas in Columbia, SC
November 28, 2009- Garcia throws 3 Touchdown passes in 34-17 win over Clemson. This was Garcia's biggest win of his career at the time.
Jan 2, 2010- Garcia and the Gamecocks are upset in their bowl game in Birmingham, AL to UConn. An emotional Garcia sheds some tears in the post game press conference.
September 25, 2010- Garcia is benched following a couple big turnovers in loss to Auburn 35-27. Connor Shaw plays most of the 4th quarter in this game
October 9, 2010- Garcia has his best game going 17-20 for 201 yards in an upset win over #1 Alabama, USC's first ever win over a #1 team.
November 13, 2010- Garcia and the Gamecocks clinch their first ever SEC East Title with a 36-14 win over Florida in the Swamp
November 27, 2010- Garcia becomes the first Gamecock QB since Tommy Suggs to beat Clemson in back to back seasons. South Carolina beat Clemson 29-7.
December 31, 2010- Garcia throws 3 interceptions and no touchdowns in a 26-17 loss to Florida State in the Chick FIl A Bowl.
March 16, 2011- Garcia is suspended for the first week of Spring Practice. During bowl preparation week Garcia had violated team rules causing the suspension. Rumors about Garcia being drunk the night before the game with multiple women were reported by some, but none of this was ever confirmed and can only be treated as rumor.
April 6, 2011- Garcia is suspended for the 5th time. This time Garcia got rowdy during a leadership conference for athletes at the school. Garcia had been drinking prior to the meeting and was suspended indefinitely by AD Eric Hyman.
May 7, 2011- Stephen Garcia graduates from The University of South Carolina
July 19, 2011- Garcia is named 2nd team preseason All SEC by the SEC Media
August 2011- Garcia is allowed to comeback to team and participates in fall practice
September 3, 2011- Connor Shaw starts against East Carolina, but after falling behind 17-0 Garcia comes off the bench and leads the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win over ECU
Week prior to Auburn Game- Garcia's grandfather passes away
October 1, 2011- Garcia goes 9/23 for 160 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT in a loss to Auburn. The Gamecocks were attempting to go 5-0 for the first time since 2001
October 3, 2011- Connor Shaw is announced as the starter for the Kentucky game
October 4, 2011- Garcia is given a substance abuse test
October 6, 2011- Steve Spurrier announces that Garcia has an injured shoulder and might not play Saturday
October 8, 2011- Garcia doesn't play in a 54-3 win over Kentucky for South Carolina
October 11, 2011- South Carolina announces that Garcia is no longer a part of the football team following a failed substance abuse test.
Garcia ends his career going 589-1021 for 7,597 yards with 47 TDs and 41 INTs. Garcia is 3rd in school history in passing yards behind Todd Ellis and Steve Taneyhill.
