The Dixie Hotseat

Southern Coaches on the Hotseat

It appears that most major schools in the South are in good shape with their coaches, but their are a few guys who need to produce this year.  Listed updated weekly during the season.  This is the preseason list.

1.  Ricky Bustle(26-44 in 6 years at ULL)-Going into year number 7 Bustle has yet to produce a winning season.  In 06 Bustle produced a 6-6 team, but in 07 the Cajuns fell to 3-9.

2.  Mark Snyder(12-23 in 3 years at Marshall)-Hard to believe that early in this decade Marshall was as hot as Boise State.  The program has struggled under Snyder and with top notch CUSA facilities there is no excuse for it

3. Mike Price(17-19 in 3 years at UTEP)-Much more was expected out of Price the last 2 seasons. 9-15 the past 2 seasons puts Price on the hotseat.

4. Mike Gundy(18-19 in 3 years at OSU)-He's a Man!! He's 40!! And he's also 1 game under ..500 in the 3 years since Les Miles left for LSU.  Boone Pickens University expects more.

5. Randy Shannon(5-7 in 1 year at Miami)-How do you only win 5 games at Miami?  How do you get killed by Virginia in your final game at the Orange Bowl?

6. Steve Kragthorpe(6-6 in 1 year at UL)-Bobby Petrino handed this man a great job.  Some had UL in the preseason top 5, yet Kragthorpe failed to get to a bowl.  Maybe the worst coaching job in the country last year

7.  Charlie Weatherbie(21-37 in 5 years at ULM)-Last year's win over Bama and a 6-6 finish helped, but Weatherbie doesn't have too much room to slip this season

8. Tommy West(41-44 in 7 years at Memphis)-After a 2-10 season in 06 it seemed as if West might be gone, but a late season push landed West in a bowl game.  Getting beat by a Sunbelt team in that bowl didn't make anyone happy though.

9. Tommy Bowden(69-42 in 9 years at Clemson)-Bowden isn't in danger of being fired, the buyout is far to high for that.  Still, if he doesn't produce at least a Division title then life is going to be tough for Tommy.  This should be Clemson's best team since the 88 Citrus Bowl champion team that retired Barry Switzer from college.  Bowden is the longest tenured coach at one BCS school without a championship now that Nutt is gone from Arkansas.

10. Bobby Johnson(20-50 in 6 years at Vandy)-Don't get me wrong, I think Johnson is a solid coach in an impossible job.  And yes I realize Vandy doesn't have a true athletic department, but the school is spending some serious $$$on facility upgrades for football and eventually you have to realize its just not going to happen.  Vandy has had chances to go bowling under Bobby, but losses to teams like Middle Tennessee State have hurt.
