Spirit wanted in a Luxury Box for this week's AU-MSU game
Week 3 Dixiefried Duds
A week 3 listing of the duds in the world of college football
1. Purdue- In the preseason I listed Purdue as one of my most improved teams this season. So far in 2011 the Boilermakers have struggled to beat Middle Tennessee and then in week 2 lost to Rice. This team has proven to be one of the most disappointing in the early part of this season.
2. Spirit- Auburn's War Eagle that circles the stadium each game went crazy Saturday and nearly took out several fans. Spirit began his flight around Jordan Hare Stadium by heading to the luxury suites and then into several sections of the crowd. Spirit was safe and did eventually land, but one of the greatest traditions in CFB nearly turned ugly.
3. Dan Mullen's clock management skills- With 10 seconds left in the Auburn-Mississippi State game Mullen had time to call 2 plays if he calls a pass play. Instead Mullen called an option and Chris Relf was stuffed 1 foot short of the goal line allowing the clock to expire.
4. The Florida Atlantic Schedule Maker- In his final year with FAU legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger opens on the road at Florida, Michigan State, and Auburn. I know these are money games, but give the man a chance to pick up a few wins in his last year.
5. Gary Gray- The former 5 star defensive back out of Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC hasn't lived up to the hype at Notre Dame. This week the phrase "Gary Gray just got burnt" was all over twitter and college football message boards. Gray allowed Michigan to walk away with an amazing win over Notre Dame in the first night game at Michigan Stadium
6. Oregon State- Did Joe Avezzano start coaching Oregon State again? This does not look like a Mike Riley coached team. After losing to Sacramento State in the opener, the Beavers should have been awaken for a trip to Madison. Instead they played like the Oregon State teams of the 80s and 90s and lost 35-0. What's wrong with the Beavers?
7. The Big East- TCU can't come and save the Big East soon enough. Week two was awful for The Big East. The defending champs UConn lost to SEC Cellar Dweller Vanderbilt. Pitt and Syracuse struggled with FCS teams. Louisville lost to Florida International at home. The only bright spot in the league appears to be South Florida and West Virginia, but then again WVU actually trailed Norfolk State at halftime.
8. Minnesota- Heading into this weekend New Mexico State was 14-98 against BCS Conference teams, now they are 15-98. Minnesota once again dropped a game against a team they should've beaten, something that seems to be a yearly trend. Thankfully the fans have a new stadium to watch the Gophers lay an egg.
9. The State of Iowa- Is Northern Iowa really 1 point away from being the best team in Iowa? Last week Iowa State beat Northern Iowa 20-19. In week 2 Iowa State beat Iowa in 3 overtimes. I know this isn't one of Iowa's best teams in 2011, but the state could be in for a rather dull college football season. That is unless Northern Iowa is better than 90% of the FBS, but I doubt that is the case
10. Myself- I'm putting myself on the list this week for spending Friday night doing play by play for a game that ended 0-0 in regulation. Irmo High School and Chapin High School, 2 schools in the Columbia, SC area failed to score a single point in regulation. The game ended with Irmo winning 3-0 on a 27 yard FG in overtime. These aren't small schools with no athletes as both schools have over 1,200 students and Chapin offensive lineman Mason Zandi will is a South Carolina Gamecock commit, Irmo is home to NC State running back Mustafa Greene. This just happened to be a night where both teams did everything in their power not to score. Hopefully this week I'll get a 42-41 shootout to call.
